Miriam’s House

... designed to end the cycle of homelessness, serves homeless single women or mothers and their children.

Not a shelter, Miriam’s House seeks to be preventative in nature for the children and rehabilitative for the adults. It is hoped that by offering a comprehensive program, individuals may be empowered to live independently.

Admission Procedures

The following procedure should be followed to make a referral to Miriam’s House:

1. A pre-application to the Clinical Director (CD) initiates the process. The CD will conduct a verbal screening to determine if the individual meets the admission criteria.

2. If qualified, an interview with Miriam’s House staff is scheduled with the applicant. A waiting list will be kept if Miriam’s House is full at the time of the request.

3. The referring agency will send a letter verifying the applicant homeless situation. The referring worker must also state that to their knowledge the client has no financial resources to seek independent housing. The application cannot be processed without the letter of verification of homelessness.

Send the letter to or fax to:

Miriam’s House
P.O. Box 3196
Lynchburg, VA 24503-0196
Fax 434-528-2725

4. The applicant attends the scheduled interview with Miriam’s House staff.

5. Following the interview, the Clinical Director will review the application. This process sometimes necessitates that additional verification and information be gathered. The referring agency’s caseworker is contacted and informed of the decision as soon as possible.

6. If the applicant is approved, Miriam’s House staff and the referral source are informed and the move in process begins.
