Miriam’s House Transitional Housing Program

Miriam’s House, designed to end the cycle of homelessness, serves homeless single women or mothers and their children. Not a shelter, Miriam’s House seeks to be preventative in nature for the children and rehabilitative for the adults.  It is hoped that by offering a comprehensive program, individuals may be empowered to live independently.

Applicants are primarily referred for interviews by emergency homeless shelters (see Admission Criteria). Following an interview and assessment, an individual or family may be admitted to the program.  Once in the program, the resident develops a Life Action Plan in conjunction with the staff of Miriam’s House.  Typically, the goals and objectives are reviewed and revised according to the resident’s needs and progress. The stay at Miriam’s House will vary according to needs. Residents do incur a program fee obligation based upon income.

The Life Action Plan for the adult residents will address the following areas of concern as well as additional issues, which specifically apply to each resident:

1.  Money Management
2.  Job Training and Employment
3.  Education
4.  Addiction and Recovery/Medical Needs
5.  Parenting
6.  Conflict Resolution

The needs of the children will be addressed through the Developmental Plan established for each child by the Clinical Director and the child’s mother.  Areas of concern to be addressed are:

1.  Education
2.  Medical Needs
3.  Child Care
4.  Any Special Needs

At the heart of our program is the belief that families repair from the trauma of homelessness and chronic poverty through their active participation in the services and the community life of Miriam’s House.  We are committed to our part in making each person’s experience at Miriam’s House one that is healing.
